FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between an automatic standby generator and a portable generator?+

An automatic standby generator is permanently connected outside your home and turns on automatically within seconds of an outage. A portable generator requires you to wheel it out, start it manually, and plug it into an inlet box.

Can a generator power my entire house?+

Yes. Standby generators (18kW–26kW) can power whole homes including air conditioners and heat pumps. Smaller portable generators (7.5kW–12kW) power essential circuits like lights, fridge, furnace, and well pumps.

Do I need a permit to install a generator hookup in Oregon?+

Yes. Adding an electrical transfer switch or generator inlet requires a city electrical permit and inspection to ensure safety.

Can I connect my generator directly to an outlet with a double-male plug?+

No. 'Suicide cords' are illegal and extremely dangerous. They create severe fire risks and can electrocute utility line workers. We install safe, code-compliant transfer kits.
