FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Simple answers to common questions about Oregon electrical permits, power company shutoffs, panel upgrades, EV chargers, and prices.
PERMITS & POWER COMPANIES
How city permits, inspections, and power company shutoffs work.
Do I need a city permit for an electrical panel upgrade in Oregon?
Yes. In Oregon, replacing an electrical panel or adding new circuits requires a city permit. Empyre Electric pulls all permits, submits the paperwork, and meets the city inspector on-site for you.
How do you coordinate power shutoffs with PGE or Pacific Power?
We schedule the exact date and time with PGE or Pacific Power. We build your new panel while the power is off, pass the city inspection, and have the power turned back on the same day.
What does the city inspector check?
The inspector checks that your breaker box is grounded properly, wires are the right size, safety breakers are installed, and all work follows Oregon safety codes.
PANEL UPGRADES & POWER CAPACITY
Knowing if your home needs a 200-amp or 400-amp electrical panel.
How do I know if my electrical panel is overloaded?
Warning signs include breakers that trip often, lights flickering when your heater or AC turns on, a buzzing sound from the breaker box, or having no empty slots left for new appliances.
What is the difference between a 200-amp and 400-amp panel?
A 200-amp panel is the standard size for most modern homes with central heating, an electric range, and an EV charger. A 400-amp service is needed for large custom homes, homes with two EV chargers and a pool, or commercial shops.
Are old Federal Pacific or Zinsco breaker boxes dangerous?
Yes. These older panels are known to fail and may not trip during an electrical short, which can cause a fire. Most insurance companies require them to be replaced.
EV CHARGERS & BACKUP GENERATORS
Installing home car chargers and storm backup power.
Can my home panel support a Level 2 EV charger?
A Level 2 car charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit. We check your panel's power capacity first. If your panel has room, we install the charger directly. If it is full, we can upgrade your panel or install a smart power manager.
How does a backup generator work during storm outages?
An automatic standby generator turns on by itself in seconds when power goes out. Alternatively, a manual generator plug allows you to safely connect a portable generator to power your essential lights and refrigerator.
Can EV chargers be installed outside in Oregon rain?
Yes. We install weatherproof outdoor chargers designed to handle Pacific Northwest rain, freezing winter temperatures, and snow safely.
